Update Posted May 2, 2025: Commissioners headed to Stehekin

The Board of County Commissioners heads to Stehekin May14-15 to talk with property owners there about a number of timely issues. Joining the board will be Chelan PUD commissioners and staff from both agencies. The two-day event will include local tours of the area and its facilities, meetings with citizens, and three community events. Among the topics to cover will be the community plan and establishing short-term rental guidelines.

Join us at these events:

  • Community Meeting: 4:30 p.m. on May 14 at the Stehekin School. The county and PUD will provide updates and take questions from the public. A community potluck follows at 6 p.m. Zoom link
  • Bakery Drop-In: 8 to 9:30 a.m. on May 15 at the Stehekin Pastry Company. Citizens are encouraged to drop in and talk with an elected official or staff member.

Background: A Sustainable Stehekin

What does a vibrant or prosperous Stehekin look like?

Located at the head of Lake Chelan, Stehekin is perhaps Chelan County’s most unique community. Accessible only by foot, boat or float plane, Stehekin is home to about 100 year-round residents. The community, surrounded by North Cascades National Park, exists on a small private land base. Its beautiful landscape and surroundings make Stehekin an attractive gateway to recreation lands and the park.

But the Stehekin Community finds itself at a crossroads. Changing demographics, uncertain infrastructure needs, a dwindling private land base and shifting visitation trends indicate a need for comprehensive community planning to develop a vision and strategic plan for Stehekin.  Multiple partners, including Chelan County, Chelan PUD, the National Park Service and Stehekin residents, recognize the need for community planning to guide development and strategic community investment over the next 10 to 20 years.

In June 2023, the agency partners met with residents to kick off this planning process. The question was asked: What are your future plans for this community so we can all begin planning for the future?

Among the topics of discussion at the kick-off meeting were flooding, growing power demands, loss of private property, worker housing needs, fire and forest health, parking at the landing, tourism and residential garbage. Much discussion centered around developing a collective vision of sustainability. Growth planning for Stehekin is missing and ultimately the community needs to align on a future growth and prosperity plan.
