Easy Street

Easy Street

Project Update

The Easy Street improvement project is currently under design. Watch for a call for bids on this project in fall 2025.

Project Description & Benefits

A single-lane, 108-foot diameter roundabout will be built at the intersection of Easy and School streets (PDF) in the Sunnyslope area of Wenatchee. Construction also will include other improvements in the project area:

  • New sidewalk and bike facilities will be installed.
  • Illumination will be installed.
  • ADA-compliant ramps will be built.
  • Rapid-flashing beacons at the four legs of the intersection will be installed.
  • The project will rebuild the driving lanes to accommodate westbound traffic.

The new roundabout will improve the intersection for both motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. The safety improvements also may encourage more people to bike and walk in the Sunnyslope area, relieving congestion and promoting a healthy lifestyle for school children.

History

The Sunnyslope area is a rapidly growing urban area adjacent to the northern city limits of Wenatchee. Traffic on this route includes residential, truck and school bus. The existing intersection experiences high accident frequencies and congestion during peak hours.

Immediate changes in traffic volumes are projected due to a recent high-density development opened in 2023 in the southwest quadrant of the intersection; another high-density development is planned to be constructed in the southeast quadrant.

In addition, land use forecasts show the Sunnyslope area is projected to double in population in the next 20 years, creating new travel demands to a route that is already deficient.

This project is essential for the community to improve mobility and safety functions at this critical intersection that is utilized for commuting to school and work and hauling freight.

Project Schedule

Design is nearly complete. Watch for a call for bids in fall 2025, with construction scheduled to begin in May 2026. The project will take 80 working days, with the goal to be completed before the start of the school year in August 2026.

Traffic Impacts

During construction, traffic controls will be in place. The work zone will include alternating, one-way traffic, with flaggers directing traffic during work hours. When crews are not working, an automated signal will direct the alternating traffic. Traffic delays of up to 20 minutes could occur. Portions of School Street, leading up to the intersection, also will be closed at times during construction. Detours will be in place; however, motorists will be encouraged to avoid the area if they can.

Funding

The project overall is expected to cost nearly $2.5 million. It is being paid for primarily with state and federal grants; however, developer fees and local dollars also are contributing.
