Air Support Unit

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit is a vital component of our community’s safety and emergency response infrastructure. Operating two Bell OH-58 helicopters, this unit is primarily dedicated to search and rescue operations for lost and injured individuals within Chelan County. Additionally, the unit plays a crucial role in counter-drug operations, managing unusual occurrences, and providing patrol support when necessary.

Team Composition

The Air Support Unit is comprised of a skilled team including:

  • Pilots
  • Tactical Flight Officers
  • A Flight Mechanic

With a history spanning over two decades, the Air Support Unit was initiated by the esteemed veteran search and rescue pilot, Pete “Rescue Pete” Peterson, who began the program with a Bell 47 helicopter. Over the years, the unit has evolved and expanded its capabilities, consistently demonstrating its commitment to saving lives and enhancing public safety.

Throughout its existence, the helicopter program has successfully rescued numerous individuals both within and beyond the borders of Chelan County. The dedication and expertise of the Air Support Unit have made it an indispensable asset to our community, ensuring rapid and effective response in critical situations.
