Public Works closes its office to the public

To minimize potential exposure to COVID-19 to staff and the public, Chelan County Public Works will be closing public access to its main office. The public access closure of public works begins on Wednesday, March 18.

During the closure, public works staff and road crews will be working either remotely, from the main office or from a county shop. The public will still be able to reach the main office via telephone or email.

For impacts to the solid waste program, keep updated on the program's website. The Moderate Risk Waste Facility in Wenatchee also has been temporarily closed until further notice.

The office closures and reduced hours at facilities come as a response to statewide COVID-19 precautions and are an attempt to slow the spread of the virus to high-risk populations through social distancing and the elimination of non-essential contact.

“We know the public understands COVID-19 is a national concern and that we are doing our part to lessen the impact of the virus on our community and its health care system,” said Eric Pierson, director/county engineer of Chelan County Public Works. “We will do our best at public works to minimize the effects of the office closures on the public.”

Road Maintenance

The closure at this time does not impact road maintenance. Service requests can be sent in via the Report a Problem page on the website or to public.works@co.chelan.wa.us.

Public Works Permitting

Public works will still be accepting and processing permits through electronic submission, although the closure will cause some disruption in processing permits. Our goal is typically a five-day turnaround period for permits submitted to public works. With the office closures and staff working remotely, that normal processing time will take longer.

This impacts the following permits: special motor vehicle (seasonal weight restrictions), approach to a county road, address request, road name request, working in the county right-of-way, application for directional signs and event permits.

To find the permits, as well as staff email addresses for submission, go to the public works website.

Traffic- and Stormwater-Related Plans and Reports

Because public works is limiting the transfer of paper and general contact, the department will not be receiving paper copies of any development plans or reports needing review. All plans and reports, such as stormwater plans or a Transportation Impact Analysis, must be submitted via email as a PDF or FTP link. Send the PDF or FTP link to cindy.grubb@co.chelan.wa.us. This policy will be in effect until further notice.

Capital Projects

At this time, the office closure does not impact scheduled capital projects. Both the Malaga Road Intersections Project and the West Cashmere Bridge Replacement Project are moving forward until further notice. Watch the public works website and Facebook page for updates.

However, an open house set for March 24 on the West Cashmere Bridge project has been cancelled.

“We are very appreciative of the public’s patience during this time of rapidly changing events,” Pierson said. “The changes are temporary, and we are committed to providing those essential services our community depends on us for while also protecting the health of our employees and the community.”
