Frequently Asked Questions

A public record is any writing containing information relating to the conduct of government or the performance of any governmental or proprietary function prepared, owned, used, or retained by any state or local agency regardless of physical form or characteristics.  A request for information is not a valid public records request.

No. Once Chelan County receives public records request, the request itself becomes a public record of the county. Someone else may make a public records request for that document, and we will provide it.

Each record must be reviewed to determine whether it is exempt from disclosure. Most exemptions are listed in RCW 42.56.230 – 42.56.480. However, certain state and federal statutes outside the Public Records Act also provide exemptions from disclosure of prohibitions on disclosure of particular records. When Chelan County denies a request for disclosure of a public record, the specific statutory exemption on which the denial is based must be identified, along with a brief explanation of how the exemption applies.

Your request will be provided in one of four ways:

Via the Public Records Portal
Available for inspection during normal business hours
Paper copies
Emailed (depending on the file size)

Chelan County charges for public records using the fee schedule authorized by RCW 42.56.120.  You can find our fee schedule under Chelan County Code Chapter 1.376.
