Stormwater project to impact South Wenatchee, Boodry Street
UPDATE (NOV. 23, 2021) This project is now complete. The detour has been lifted.
ORIGINAL POST: A contractor for Chelan County’s Surface and Stormwater Management Utility begins construction on Monday, Nov. 15, on a project on South Wenatchee Avenue and Boodry Street.
The intersection and a portion of South Wenatchee Road will be closed to through traffic during the work, which should take about two weeks. Local traffic, which includes property owners, businesses, delivery services and emergency services, will have access to their properties.
A detour will be in place during construction. With South Wenatchee Avenue closed to through traffic at Malaga Alcoa Highway, motorists who don’t live in the project area will need to follow detour signs south to South Wenatchee Avenue and Beuzer Street. The detour route then follows Beuzer Street to Boodry Street.
The work that begins on Nov. 15 includes the installation of stormwater facilities on South Wenatchee Avenue that will provide water quality treatment in the case of a short duration storm that sends contaminants such as oil, grease, anti-icer, sediment and other pollutants from the community into the nearby creek. Squilchuck Creek, which leads to the Columbia River, is the home of endangered species such as steelhead trout and spring Chinook salmon as well as resident rainbow trout.
This is the second phase of the stormwater project, called the Squilchuck Creek Outfall Retrofit Project. In 2019, repairs to the stormwater system and roadway were necessary when a large sinkhole developed on South Wenatchee Avenue after a period of heavy rains. The existing stormwater conveyance system under the collapsed roadway, which was scheduled to be replaced with this project, was deteriorated beyond repair, so the county moved forward with the project then.
The most-recent construction will complete the project, which is being paid for with funding from the Stormwater Utility and a $550,000 grant from the state Department of Ecology. The contractor on the project is Olin Excavation of Entiat.
