Moderate Risk Waste Facility continues to see steady growth

The Chelan County Moderate Risk Waste Facility continues to show steady annual growth in both usage and the amount of waste collected, says a report (PDF) from the Chelan County Solid Waste program.

In 2025, there were 2,270 visitors to the facility. That’s a 3.6 percent growth over 2024 and a 90 percent growth over 2020, the first full year the facility was open.

Those visitors in 2025 brought in 183,195 pounds of waste for recycling, reuse and safe disposal. That’s about 80.7 pounds per household, according to the 2025 report.

Of that waste, 11,338 pounds of material was placed in the facility’s in-house reuse cart for visitors to take and use in their homes. The reuse cart has a variety of items, from latex and spray paints to household cleaners and pesticides, that people can take for free.

Just what are people bringing to the facility?

Latex paint is by far the most popular item brought into the facility. People brought in 65,967 pounds of latex paint in 2025.

Other popular materials:

  • Used oil (29,822 pounds)
  • Oil-based paint (13,225 pounds)
  • Auto batteries (11,385 pounds)
  • Antifreeze (11,051 pounds)
  • Other paint-related materials (8,653 pounds)

The majority of material (71 percent) brought into the facility in 2025 was recycled. About 18 percent was used as energy and only 4 percent was incinerated.

The Chelan County Moderate Risk Waste Facility, 3612 Highway 97A, is open for drop-off 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday as well as the first Saturday of the month. The facility is free to Chelan County residents; a $10 donation is suggested.
