ACCESS Audit Successful Completion

Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison is proud to announce Chelan County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) successful completion of both an ACCESS Technical Security Audit and an Access Business Audit, reinforcing the agencies ongoing commitment to compliance, accessibility, security, and the responsible handling of sensitive information.

ACCESS, short for A Central Computerized Enforcement Service System, refers to a computer-controlled communications system located at the Washington State Patrol (WSP) which extracts data from multiple criminal justice information repositories. The associated comprehensive ACCESS audits evaluate how organizations manage access to digital and physical criminal justice information environments. ACCESS audits promote the protection of sensitive criminal justice data and ensures that both physical spaces and digital systems are secure, usable, and compliant with the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy.

These independent audits, conducted by certified WSP Auditors, assessed both the technical and operational data entry aspects of the agency:

•    All transactions conducted through the ACCESS system are fully compliant with the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy. Furthermore, each substation and main office location meets or exceeds the established physical and technical security standards outlined in CJIS Security Policy.
•    The audit also verified that critical data entries—including protection orders, warrants, missing persons, stolen articles, and information related to violent subjects—are consistently and accurately submitted into the Criminal Justice Information systems in accordance with all federal and state requirements.
•    The Access Business Audit included User Access Audits, verifying that only authorized personnel have access to sensitive systems and data contained within those sensitive data bases.

Passing both audits demonstrates CCSO’s proactive approach to:

•    Protecting personal and sensitive criminal justice information through strong user access controls and cybersecurity protocols.
•    Maintaining full compliance with state, federal, and industry-specific accessibility and security regulations.
•    Promoting accountability and transparency, core values in building public trust and operational excellence.

“These audits are not just procedural they’re foundational to how we operate. They reflect our responsibility to the public to provide secure, equitable, and accessible services at all levels.”
(Sheriff Morrison).

ACCESS audits also provide actionable recommendations that drive continual improvement. By undergoing regular audits CCSO not only reduces legal and reputational risk but also strengthens trust, enhances user experiences, and ensures that no one is excluded from essential services.
