Natural Resources awarded nearly $770,000 for Peshastin Creek project

Chelan County Natural Resources was awarded nearly $770,000 to complete the study and design of a restoration project that will not only relocate and reconnect the Peshastin Creek channel with its historic floodplain but also eventually build two highway bridges across the rerouted creek.

Awarded by the U.S. Department of Interior, the competitive grant program of the Bureau of Reclamation awarded a total of $51 million to 18 projects in eight states that will restore and protect aquatic ecosystems.

In the 1950s, aquatic habitat within Peshastin Creek was severely degraded by the construction of State Route 97, which reduced and straightened the stream channel and disconnected it from the historic channel footprint and floodplain.

Natural Resources will complete a hydrology and hydraulic assessment of existing and proposed conditions; perform an alternatives analysis seeking input from fish biologists, local landowners, and other stakeholders; and conduct a bridge study and risk analyses, to produce a 60 percent design package. The project was awarded $768,587.

The Department of Interior announced the successful grant applicants on Dec. 20. Overall, the grant dollars will be used to support the study, design and construction of collaboratively developed ecosystem restoration projects that provide widespread regional benefits and improve the health of fisheries, wildlife and aquatic habitat through restoration and improved fish passage.

The projects selected to receive funding are listed online with the full press release from the Department of Interior.
