Lodging Tax Advisory Committee seeks 1 new member

Chelan County seeks people who are interested in filling a two-year term on the county’s Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC), a voluntary board that makes recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on the allocation of tax dollars generated by overnight stays in the county’s unincorporated areas.

LTAC is a six-member citizen advisory body appointed by the BOCC; two members for each of the three commissioners’ districts are appointed.

Half the commission members represent businesses that generate lodging taxes, such as hotels, motels, lodges and short-term rentals. The other half represent agencies and nonprofits that would be eligible to use lodging tax dollars. Chelan County’s unincorporated areas generate about $2 million in lodging taxes a year.

Candidates for the open position must represent a lodging-related business in the unincorporated area of District 3, or the northeast section of the county. District 3 includes a portion of north Wenatchee and goes northeast to Chelan and Manson. A map of the district is available online.

“LTAC serves a very important function, and by state law and county resolution, we have detailed requirements for membership,” said Chelan County Commissioner Brad Hawkins, who represents District 3. “This particular opening is for someone representing a business located in the unincorporated portion of District 3 who pays lodging taxes, so any lodging provider located outside of our cities – from Sunnyslope to Stehekin – would be eligible for consideration.”

Hawkins is currently taking applications for the open seat and will recommend the final candidate to the BOCC. All applications should be emailed by 5 p.m. on June 30 to CM.LTAC@co.chelan.wa.us. Finalists will be selected for interviews in mid-July, with the goal of having someone in place before LTAC’s regular meeting on July 25.

As part of the application process, potential candidates must answer three questions, including why they would like to join the committee, current and past board experiences, and skills and expertise that may make them suited for the committee. The application is available online.

The commission meets monthly at 1 to 3 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month at 400 Douglas St.; however, it may hold additional special meetings throughout the year. LTAC makes recommendations to the BOCC on how grant dollars that utilize lodging taxes are distributed in the county, a process typically held in the fall.

“Chelan County’s tourism economy continues to be one of our most important benefits,” Hawkins said. “We hope people interested in applying are fully committed to finding ways to enhance opportunities for visitors, bringing more ‘heads to beds’ to grow lodging tax revenues to the county.”
