In-custody death investigation is ongoing at Chelan County jail
The Chelan County Regional Justice Center reports an incarcerated woman was found deceased Sunday, Nov. 22, by corrections deputies while they were serving the dinner meal.
Corrections deputies found the 42-year-old woman unresponsive at 5:17 p.m. Sunday and they immediately started CPR. An ambulance also was called; however, attempts by corrections officers and paramedics to revive the woman were unsuccessful.
The woman, who was booked into the jail earlier that day, was being held in isolation in a quarantine cell. It has been standard operating procedure during COVID-19 to isolate individuals for three to 10 days until they are cleared by medical staff to be moved to general population housing units.
An investigation into the death has been turned over to the North Central Washington Special Investigation Unit, or SIU. The SIU is standard procedure when a death is reported in a jail.
An autopsy will be performed. The deceased woman’s name is not being released at this time.
The SIU is a multi-jurisdictional team made up of the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, East Wenatchee Police Department, Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, Wenatchee Police Department and the Washington State Patrol. Any further details about the investigation will be reported by the SIU.
