If your tires are in the road, prepare to be towed

The spring flower bloom in the Cashmere and Dryden area is attracting hundreds of hikers from around the state, causing parking issues on narrow canyon roads and potentially impacting emergency response to the areas.

To combat the issue, Chelan County Public Works is instigating no-parking measures on Olalla Canyon and Nahahum Canyon roads. It is vital that motorists do not park vehicles on the pavement so emergency services can access the area.

Electronic reader boards are positioned on both roads, warning people that no parking is allowed on the pavement. Permanent no-parking signs also were installed that read: No parking on pavement both sides.

In addition, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office will be patrolling the roads and ticketing offenders. Tickets are $100 for parking in the roadway. Vehicles blocking traffic may be towed.

Olalla Canyon and Nahahum Canyon roads are narrow, often no more than 20 feet in width, so any parking on the pavement restricts the travel lanes. Because off-road parking is limited on the two roads, Chelan County recommends that hikers visiting the area make arrangements to shuttle people to and from the trailheads.
