A community open house in April attracted more than 100 people interested in the start of the Upper Wenatchee Pilot Project this month.
Property owners and concerned citizens gathered April 25 at the Lake Wenatchee Recreation Club. Joining them were natural resource specialists with the U.S. Forest Service and Chelan County Natural Resources as well as partners from Lake Wenatchee Fire & Rescue, the Washington Department of Natural Resources, Lake Wenatchee Fire Adapted Communities, Cascadia Conservation District and Blue Forest Conservation.
The Upper Wenatchee Pilot Project has been in the making for seven years. The project covers 75,000 acres near Plain and Lake Wenatchee. When completed, it will restore forest health and resiliency by re-establishing forest structure, returning fire to the landscape, improving wildlife habitat and improving watershed function.
Forest health restoration treatments are underway now, with work beginning in the vicinity of Chiwawa Loop Road in late May. Work will include commercial and non-commercial tree thinning, prescribed fire, road construction and road decommissioning. The initial treatments beginning this spring will focus on non-commercial thinning along road sides and units near the wildland-urban interface of Plain. The work will occur in phases through 2030.
