Chelan County commissioners have created a public information officer position that will serve a variety of county departments.
Jill FitzSimmons, formerly the PIO for Chelan County Public Works, took over the new role as PIO for county government on July 6. FitzSimmons was the PIO at the county’s road department for nearly five years.
In her new role, FitzSimmons will not only continue to work with Public Works but also will serve the Board of County Commissioners and those departments the board oversees.
One PIO for the county provides Chelan County the opportunity to create a unified communications strategy for its departments, said Bob Bugert, chairman of the Board of County Commissioners.
“The Commissioners recognize the importance of providing pertinent information to our community in a timely and understandable manner,” Bugert said. “Jill has a great ability to engage people—often, and through many means—so that the County can provide a higher level of service to our citizens.”
FitzSimmons said she sees the new position as an opportunity to expand upon the work she has been doing at Public Works.
“With the tools and technology we have available today, the public expects clear, friendly and timely information from their county government. By creating this position, commissioners have shown communicating with the public is a priority for them,” FitzSimmons said. “And, on a personal level, to get to work with a variety of county departments is very exciting for me.”
