Salary: PW08 Steps 2-4 $4,568.45 - $4,991.39 Longevity Steps 5-8 $5,218.84.- $5,971.75

The position includes a state retirement system, with a deferred comp program available. Health insurance package includes Medical, Dental, and county contributions to a personal health savings account. Includes up to 11 paid holidays and additional floating holidays per collective bargaining agreement. Along with monthly accrued vacation and sick leave. 

SUMMARY

The Solid Waste Technician for Dryden Transfer Station and Countywide litter crew lead shall independently and as directed by the Solid Waste Manager, work as an attendant at Dryden Transfer Station and conducts litter and illegal dump clean ups, homeless encampment cleanups and other activities engaged in the collection, sorting, loading and disposal of refuse and recyclable materials throughout the county as directed. Assisting as a transfer station attendant two or more days per week as assigned.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following; other duties may be assigned:

Perform collection, sorting, directing, instructing and assessing costs with the public. Advises customers of disposal options, conducts numerous transactions daily, performs basic mathematical calculations and prepares end-of-the day reports.

Operate a computer system to complete daily transactions. Learn and utilizes the computer scale program to accurately process loads and disposal transactions. 

Provide clear, accurate and friendly information to the public regarding garbage disposal and recycling services both in person and by telephone. Maintains professional and positive public relations at all times.

Ensures all records and reports on transactions, deposits and waste quantities are accurately documented and accounted for Maintains a high level of attention to detail.

Performs manual labor including the collection and removal of trash, illegal dumping debris, and homeless encampment waste along county roads and county properties.

Operates a light-duty vehicle with a tandem axle trailer  two to three times per week, collect, load and dispose of refuse along roadways and illegal dump sites. Safely operates a winch and dump trailer.   

Operates heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, yard trucks and semi-trailers, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. Conducts equipment inspections and ensures vehicles and machinery are maintained according to County standards.

Performs basic mathematics calculations to  measure brush loads, calculate disposal fees and assess customers costs. Maintains accurate site and quantity records. 

Observes and enforces all safety rules and standards. Directs traffic flow at the transfer station to ensure the safety of the public and employees.

Monitors equipment for scheduled maintenance and reports required repairs promptly.  

Performs the full range of duties associated with Solid Waste Transfer Station Operators.

Responds to public inquires and resolves issues within the scope of authority, demonstrating strong customer service skills.

Maintains a clean, safe, and professional environment at all sites and facilities for both the public and employees.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May have minor Supervisory Responsibilities of litter crew members.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED, experience and understanding of book keeping, cash handling, public interaction and good driving skills. Two (2) years’ experience in each area required. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to complete routine checklists, maintenance forms and write reports and statements. Ability to speak effectively and respectfully with the general public. Ability to direct staff and contractors effectively.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to report daily revenues and bank deposits.  Familiar with computers and ability to learn programs.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where practical problem solving is necessary. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to interact with people and diffuse critical situations with reasonable judgement and compassion.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

A valid Washington State driver license is required. Prefer to have certifications in First Aid/CPR/AED and traffic control/flagging.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, rise and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, jump, climb, bending over and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 100 lbs. or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and far vision.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles from garbage/refuse, and is exposed to extremes of weather and temperature, traffic hazards, dust, dirt, and noise. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment can be occasionally loud.
