2024 Bridge Repairs

2024 Bridge Repairs

(Photo above: The Peshastin Bridge will be the only bridge in the project that will require a temporary full closure. The four-week closure begins June 17.)

Project Updates

Posted April 29: The project was awarded to N.A. Degerstrom, Inc., for $2,057,740. Construction begins on June 17, with the contractor beginning on the Peshastin Bridge.

Project Description

In summer 2024, Chelan County will make repairs to five bridges around the county. Deck joints on all the bridges will be replaced. Two of the bridges will also receive new concrete overlays to the deck.

Expansion joints allow concrete bridges to naturally expand and contract. When replacing the bridge deck joints, a contractor will remove the existing concrete on each side of the joint and pour back with high strength concrete while also installing a new rubber seal in the joint. The roadway approaches to each bridge also will be repaved where the road and bridge end joints meet.

When pouring a deck overlay, the contractor will remove the top 1.5 inches of concrete deck and pour back 1.5 inches of new concrete.

The following bridges are scheduled for repairs:

Bridge Name Road Milepost Description of Work
Peshastin Bridge Main Street (Peshastin) 4.35 to 4.43 Overlay the bridge deck and replace the bridge deck joints (10 joints on the bridge and 2 end joints)
Ardenvoir Bridge Mad River Road 0.05 to 0.08 Overlay the bridge deck and replace the bridge deck joints (1 joint on the bridge and 2 end joints)
New Griffith Bridge Entiat River Road 3.91 to 3.98 Replace the bridge deck joints (2 end joints)
Chelan Falls Bridge Chelan Falls Road 0.64 to 0.74 Replace the bridge deck joints (4 joints on the bridge and 2 end joints)
Stone Hill Bridge Colockum Road 17.79 to 17.81 Replace the bridge deck joints (2 end joints)

Project Benefits

Bridge deck overlays extend the life of a bridge by more than 20 by replacing the damaged concrete with new concrete that protects the reinforcement steel from corrosive road chemicals such as de-icers. An overlay also provides a smoother ride across the bridge, which reduces impact damage from bouncing vehicles.

Joint replacements can last more than 10 years and protect a bridge deck from impact damage caused by bouncing vehicles. Joint repairs also keep corrosive chemicals from flowing off the deck and damaging the bridge piers and bearings.

Life span off all the repairs is dependent on traffic volumes, especially truck volumes.

Peshastin Bridge

Only construction on the Peshastin Bridge will require a temporary full closure of the bridge. The bridge is too narrow for a one-lane closure; its narrow lanes, sidewalks and guardrails leave little work space for the construction crew.

The four-week closure will begin June 17 and the bridge will re-open on July 13.

The detour route for Peshastin Bridge will utilize North Road, Chumstick Highway and Highway 2. See the links below for the detour map.

Construction Schedule

Work on the Peshastin Bridge begins June 17 and the bridge will re-open on July 13.

Scheduled work on the remaining four bridges may occur during the Peshastin Bridge closure but is highly dependent on the contractor’s workforce, equipment and material availability.

The project is expected to be awarded in early April. A construction schedule will be determined with the new contractor. We will post the schedule when we have it available. All construction will wrap up in summer 2024.

Travel Impacts

With the exception of the Peshastin Bridge, the repair work will allow for one-lane, flagger-controlled traffic on the Ardenvoir, New Griffith, Chelan Falls and Stone Hill bridges. Motorists should plan for minor traffic delays when crews are working on those bridges.

See the traffic impacts included with the Peshastin Bridge four-week closure above.

Funding

The project is fully paid for with federal grant dollars from the Washington State Department of Transportation. The project is projected to cost $3,635,000 for both design and construction.
