Chip sealing starts July 28 in Wenatchee area; watch for flaggers, plan for delays

UPDATE JULY 28: Chip sealing will start July 29. Crews were set back a day because they continue to work to get homeowners to remove vehicles parked on the roadway. Cars, RVs and trailers must be removed from those roadways scheduled for chip sealing.Beginning July 28, Chelan County road crews will be chip sealing throughout the Wenatchee area.

POSTED JULY 24: Chip sealing should take about three weeks in the Wenatchee District. Among the more high-trafficked county roads scheduled for chip sealing this year are Burch Mountain Road and Easy Street.

On July 28, the crew will be chip sealing in the South Wenatchee area. Crews will spend about three days there before moving to the Walnut Street area on Aug. 3. By about Aug. 4, the crew will be in the Burch Mountain Road and Sunnyslope areas. And Easy Street will be started about Aug. 10.

When crews are chip sealing, motorists should expect minor traffic delays. Flaggers will be directing traffic, which will be at one lane. A pilot car may be used in busier areas.

Motorists are reminded to slow down in the work zone and on recently chip sealed roads. Loose gravel may be on the roadway. Roads are typically broomed a day or two after a road is chip sealed to allow the roadway to cure.

During and after chip sealing, CCPW recommends:

  • No parking vehicles, trailers or RVs on the street.
  • Keep your speed under 20 mph for a few days.
  • Keep pets indoors or fenced in the yard for their safety.
  • Bicyclists and motorcyclists should use extra caution.

For a map of the roadways to be chip sealed, go to the Chelan County Public Works website. The tentative schedule is:

Day 1: Boodry Street, Beuzer Street, Chapman Road, South Wenatchee Avenue, Marker Street and Depot Street.

Day 2: Duke Street, Simmons/Judkins streets, Terminal Avenue, Viewdale Avenue, Dundas/Burns streets, Broad Avenue and Cross Street.

Day 3: South Mission Street, Circle Street, South Miller Street, Harris Court and Walnut Street.

Day 4: Walnut Place, Walnut Court, Norman Street/Sorenson Avenue, Locust Street, Harbel Street, ViewRidge Drive, Tarn Place, Heather Lane and Kimberly Court.

Day 5: Burch Mountain Road, West Peters Street, East Peters Street, Northridge Drive and Knowles Road.

Day 6: Knowles Road, Elizabeth Court, West Rolling Hills Lane and School Street.

Day 7: Crestview Road and Easy Street.

Day 8: Complete Easy Street.

The chip sealing schedule relies heavily on weather conditions and performance of equipment and materials. Plans can change. To keep up on where the preservation crew is, follow its progress on the CCPW Facebook page.
