Victim Witness

Too often victims of crime take a "back seat" to criminals when it comes to having "rights" within the criminal justice system. Here in Chelan County , our Victim/Witness advocates are doing everything possible to see to it that the victims of felony crimes committed by adults and juveniles are treated with the respect, dignity and courtesy that they so rightly deserve. Providing these services to crime victims and witnesses helps to enhance the "justice" in the criminal justice system. We aim to provide justice for the victim as well as the criminal.

The Victim Witness program was founded in the 1980's and is a fundamental part of the Chelan County Prosecutor's office. Each year hundreds of victims and witnesses turn to the Chelan County Victim Witness Unit for assistance on all types of crimes, including domestic violence, serious assaults, sexual assaults, robbery, forgery, identity theft and property crimes.

Our Victim/Witness advocates act as a liaison between the criminal justice system and victims and witnesses of crime. Our advocates provide continuing support and information throughout a victim's experience with the court system. Advocates are available to answer questions and provide notification of court hearings, attend hearings with a victim or witness, schedule necessary interviews, assist in preparation and submission of restitution requests and victim impact letters and other needs the victim or witness may encounter as they navigate through the sometimes complicated criminal justice system.

Chelan County Victim/Witness advocates also refer victims to appropriate resources available both locally and state wide to address issues of safety, physical and mental health, support groups and other issues that are the result of a crime. Many times these resources are necessary to help victims begin to recover from their traumatic experience.

Our focus is to ease the anxiety of victims and witnesses as the case progresses through the criminal justice system.

Sincerely,

Gary A. Riesen
