Habitat SubcommitteeMuch of the attention for the habitat element is focused on habitat for salmonids due to recent protection of several salmonids under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Chelan County's Natural Resource Program is structured to integrate Watershed Planning Act processes with salmon recovery process, specifically the recently adopted Washington State Salmon Recovery Act.A great deal of work on the habitat component is already underway in the Wenatchee Watershed. Chelan County is the "lead entity" for the Salmon Recovery Funding Board's grant application process. The County's process is well defined, in operation, and is successful in securing habitat recovery grants. The County's Natural Resource Program also pursues other sources of needed funding for salmon recovery projects and watershed planning. The Watershed Planning Act, while it does require the habitat element to include salmon recovery, does not exclude other species and their habitat requirements, and the Planning Unit will accordingly broaden the scope of the habitat salmonid habitat requirements. The following steps outline the Planning Unit's approach to the assessment of habitat in the Wenatchee Watershed:
