This is a temporary position that assists the vegetation management technician in the performance of specialized and skilled equipment operation and manual maintenance related to vegetation management and other related work tasks.
This position performs responsible maintenance work involving, the safe, efficient and skilled operation of computer controlled application equipment, hand reel and backpack herbicide application, mechanical mower and weed cutter equipment together with other related activities. Work will require the employee to exercise initiative and judgment in the completion of assignments. Herbicide application will require sufficient knowledge of math and mechanical aptitude to adjust and operate the equipment as required. Basic knowledge of plants and soils is essential.
Work is normally performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Herbicide application work may require the performance of duties at irregular hours dependent upon weather conditions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Drives truck in connection with the transportation of herbicides and herbicide application equipment. Performs vegetation and noxious weed control using computer controlled application equipment, backpack spraying equipment, hand reel and spray gun and hand operated weed cutters. May operate tractor with mower attachment for vegetation control on road shoulders and right of ways.
Operates light road maintenance equipment performing a variety of duties requiring both skill and knowledge of safe and efficient operation techniques. Is responsible for pre-trip inspections and maintenance and troubleshooting of spray truck and equipment.
Keeps and maintains accurate and legible daily records pertinent to all vegetation control methods and procedures. Maintains inventory.
- Attends classes and conferences to keep license current.
- Calculates, mixes and loads herbicides into application equipment.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Work will be assigned and evaluated by the Vegetation Management Technician while in progress and upon completion for conformance with given instructions. Specific work assignments will be given with instructions concerning material to use and application rates.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Day to day duties shall include, but not be limited to, controlling vegetation by mechanical and chemical methods; manually raking and picking up and loading/unloading vegetation/debris in truck or trailer. Will be required to lift up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally up to one hundred (100) pounds. Will be required to carry and utilize a 4 gallon backpack sprayer on their back on level and occasionally steep or uneven ground; perform vegetation control using a hand held weed cutter, handgun and hose reel, computerized application equipment that requires eye/hand coordination and long hours of sitting in a truck, provide traffic control and other vegetation maintenance activities.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); 2 years of equipment operation experience at a level required for the classification or substituting on a month for month basis, any experience, education or training which would demonstrate the level of knowledge and ability required. Basic experience with soils and plant identification sufficient to apply herbicides effectively and correctly. Ability to summarize application records using Excel and/or Word software. A working knowledge of GIS mapping is a plus.
The ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos in English. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to members of the public and other employees of the organization.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and explanations of task involved. Requires good manual dexterity and motor coordination. Must be in good physical condition.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Washington State Driver's License, prefer a current First Aid/CPR/AED Card. Must have or be able to obtain a Washington State Department of Agriculture Public Operator License within 45 days of employment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee generally works outdoors operating light equipment; is exposed to extremes of weather and temperature, traffic hazards, dust, dirt, herbicide residue at ground level and noise. Will be required to work variable shifts throughout the season. All personal protective equipoment and supplies furnished by employer.
