Ohme Gardens is a unique evergreen oasis in the heart of Washington State. With a mile of natural stone pathways that wander through the hillside gardens, towering cedars and firs, lush foliage, mesmerizing waterfalls and tranquil pools, Ohme Gardens is a one-of-a-kind, world renowned attraction. The Gardens were started by Herman & Ruth Ohme in 1929 as a private family retreat. At the urging of friends and the community they opened the Gardens to the public in 1939. The Gardens are now owned and operated by Chelan County. As stewards of this regional treasure, it is the County's goal to maintain, preserve and improve the Gardens for generations to come.
The Garden Director is the driving force of the Gardens. This position directs and coordinates all activities including administrative activities, with an emphasis on maintenance and operations. Also responsible for, directly or through staff, admissions, sales, public outreach, marketing, fundraising, as well as private events and weddings held at the Gardens. This is an intense, hands-on position.
Operations and Maintenance:
Plan, evaluate and direct horticultural and landscaping activities, including the selection of plants, seeds, chemicals, horticultural displays, materials, and equipment.
Review and prioritize infrastructural needs, develop appropriate and effective initiatives to address those needs.
Diagnose plant problems caused by insects, disease, etc.; develop and implement treatment plans as needed.
Monitor and maintain irrigation system including the irrigation pump and computerized timer to ensure proper operation of the system and adherence to the required watering schedule.
Inspect completed work of subordinate employees for conformance to expectations and standards.
Serve as quality control expert at the Gardens, providing a high level of attention to all details.
Administration and Outreach:
Hire and train staff as needed.
Forecast annual operating budget and figures, and monitor expenses to ensure compliance.
Develop programs to increase attendance.
Market Ohme Gardens through all forms of communications, including online, social media, print, etc.
Develop community relationships. Network with the community and travel industries to further the Gardens as a tourist destination.
Research, coordinate and approve the ordering and purchasing of operating equipment and supplies, office equipment and supplies and items for resale in the gift shop.
Enforce and implement County and Ohme Gardens policies and procedures.
Private Events and Weddings:
Coordinate the booking of special events and weddings.
Develop, review and enforce contracts for events and weddings.
Meet with venue contractors/responsible parties for event/wedding planning.
Arrange for set-up and clean-up of events and weddings.
This position trains and supervises seasonal maintenance and event employees, office staff, and inmate workers. Analyzes and resolves work problems and/or assists team in solving problems.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Also, ability to read, write and interpret contracts.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree preferred in Property/Garden Management, Marketing, Business Management or Horticulture and 5-8 years of experience in landscape management, garden management, or similar; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must successfully complete training through the Chelan County Regional Justice Center to qualify to supervise inmate workers. Valid Washington State driver’s license, and must possess or obtain upon hire, Washington State pesticide license ("Public Operators License").
Must have the ability to work in hot and cool weather and under sometimes strenuous conditions. Must have the ability to traverse up to a 200 foot elevation over uneven stone paths.
Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, kneel and crouch, use hands to finger, handle, feel and reach in order to operate equipment. Must be able to speak and hear. Must be able to identify and distinguish colors in garden areas.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, traverse steep terrain, lift, carry, and talk or hear. Work is performed mostly outdoors in hot and cool weather environment. Some indoor work is performed. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when using some equipment, depending on the machinery being operated. Eye and ear protection provided and required for certain types of work.
During the six months the Gardens are open (April 15 - October 15), this position requires long hours and on-call availability 7 days/week. Onsite housing is available with this position at a reduced rate.
This is a regular full-time, exempt position eligible for medical, dental, life insurance, and participation in the WA State Department of Retirement Systems Public Employee Retiremetn System (PERS).
