Project OverviewChelan County is updating the Transportation Element of the Chelan County Comprehensive Plan, which was initially developed in 2000. The growing population and changing nature of the regional economy requires us to realign our transportation needs with current and projected land use patterns. The 20-year plan will identifies the improvements to the county’s roadways, bridges, bike, pedestrian, aviation and rail facilities. As required by the Growth Management Act, a prioritized transportation project list, financing strategies and implementation measures are included in the plan. Who is involved in the project? The project is being led by the Public Works Department. A Steering Committee and a Stakeholder Advisory Group provided ongoing guidance and direction on the plan update. Their meetings were open to the public. In addition, two open houses provided members of the public the opportunity to comment on existing conditions and future needs. How can I participate?Download and review the draft report and provide comments to the County by July 17, 2009 as described above. Or attend the planned workshops and public hearings during the Comprehensive Plan amendment process as identified in the schedule below. If you are a member of a community organization interested in a presentation about the Transportation Element Update, please contact PW@co. chelan.wa.us by email or at 509-667-6415. How has the plan update occurred and when will it be adopted? First, transportation-related data was collected in the county to establish comprehensive baseline information. Next, existing transportation policies were revised to match current community values and land-use policies and to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. Then, 20-year forecasts were analyzed to identify aspects of the system that would benefit most from improvements. Next, potential project costs were estimated and financial projections were studied to determine when the highest priority priority projects should be built. Then financial strategies and implementation measures were identified. Finally, the Transportation Element Update is scheduled to be adopted by the Chelan County Board of Commissioners in December 2009, as outlined below.
